Position Title: Aviation Flight Nurse Rescuer

Pay Grade: 26 (Schedule B Public Safety EMS Dept. A-01)

Salary: $29.00-$43.00

Job Summary:

Under general direction, exercises leadership and management of tactical clinical objectives specific to duties, tasks, and responsibilities related to the daily activities of the aviation unit within Washington County EMS; a public safety EMS Department responsible for helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) as well as air rescue public safety such as hoist rescue operations, aviation fire suppression, and air rescue needs within the near 700 square miles of Washington County and beyond the county boundaries for regional support as well. Responsible for providing advanced pre-hospital care of critically injured/ill patients and search and rescue activities as needed. Participates in public service education and safety programs throughout the county and regional response area. Is the helicopter rescue trained flight nurse available for immediate tasking’s 24/7 seven days a week. This position will be the primary flight nurse trained to a minimum of the helicopter rescue specialist standards for the aviation unit.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

This is a job classification within the Public Safety job family. This role works closely with program management to provide safe, effective and efficient air rescue and HEMS operations. Responsible for ensuring adherence of Texas DSHS rules and regulations that apply to the individual certification. Requires a varied work schedule to meet the needs of the department. Available for emergency response at all times when in the geographic area. Works some holidays, nights and weekends. This position works a rotating shift schedule (W/O/W/OOOOO/W/O/W/OOOOO or a variant of such) that encompasses 2,080 hours of straight time and approximately 250 hours of built-in overtime. This position is a non-exempt position and every hour over 40 duty hours is overtime. This employee must be the ultimate team player with a “put others first mentality”. Will often work from two different organizational charts receiving direction from the Director of EMS and the divisional chiefs. These nurses must be credentialed to the P3 credentialing level within the system and able to perform with autonomy in a unique environment. This position comes with a responsibility that encompasses a wide spectrum of abilities and at times must function as a helicopter rescue specialist (HRS), a Paramedic Crew Chief, and a critical care transport provider.

Receives supervision from the EMS Director, the EMS Medical Director, on-line and off-line medical direction, and on-scene unified command structure, the Aviation Division Chief, Sr. Crew Chief, and the EMS (Ground) Division Chief.

Exercises supervision to: first responders (police, fire, and volunteer agencies), ECA’s, EMT’s, Paramedics, flight nurse rescue specialist, and SRT-Paramedics.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Under the general direction of the Sr. Crew Chief and Aviation Division Chief:

• Participates in daily shift planning, developing, and managing departmental goals. Assist the EMS Aviation Division Chief with operational and administrative activities related to the EMS Department and their respective shifts.

• Participates in daily shift training, clinical plans, goals, and objectives consistent with departmental goals and objectives.

• Participates in opportunities for improved performance of shift personnel.

• Participates in the quality improvement and enforcement of clinical and operational policies and procedures.

• Functions as an immediate response to mitigate water, tactical, wild land fir, land and SAR responses for the department.

• Responds to emergency calls, as required, to provide medical care both basic and advanced care in both favorable and unfavorable conditions.

• Performs electronic patient care charting, reporting, and data collection as required by the EMS Department, the Aviation Division Chief and in accordance with patient privacy rules and regulations. Represents EMS department and conducts public relations events and educational in-services for Washington County and surrounding service area.

• Attends community meetings, seminars, conferences, professional association, and other meetings and participates on related committees, as directed on shift and by the EMS administration.

• Performs intensive inspections of the aircraft, EMS vehicles, equipment, and supplies to ensure response ready for all responses (emergency, rescue, fire suppression, hoist operations, etc…).

• Follows EMS standard operating procedures, protocols, and other county manuals as required by county employment and EMS procedures. Must be an employee that sees him/herself here for the long haul and loyal to the department. Exemplifying the highest standards of professionalism, conduct, character, and appearance. Must be the example to the community and department.

• Maintains personal continuing education in accordance with the current recertification process with Texas DSHS and Texas BON in addition to company required certifications to include:

• Currently licensed as a registered nurse in the state of Texas.

• Current certifications in BCLS, ACLS, PALS, ENPC, NRP.

• Approved Trauma Certification within 6 months of hire, per company policy.

• Minimum of 3 years’ experience in emergency department or critical care unit.

• CFRN (Certified Flight Registered Nurse) is required within 18 months of hire.

• Must pass on initial hire and annually a functional fitness test to include a

300meter swim 8 minutes or less, followed by either a 1 mile run in 9 minutes

or less or a 3 mile walk while donning a 45lb pack in 45 minutes or less.
