Independently assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates the nursing care of patients with a range of needs from uncomplicated to highly complex during ground transport. In collaboration with the patient and family, provides theory-based professional nursing care and coordinates care delivery with the physician and other members of the healthcare team.



Requirements

Education

    • Graduation from an accredited educational program in professional nursing. Required

Experience

      • 3-4 years critical care nursing experience Required

Licenses and Certifications

        • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure Valid RN license in the District of Columbia (DC) and 1 of the compact states (MD, DE, or VA) or able to obtain prior to completion of orientation. within 30 Days Required and
        • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation Must have current ACLS, PALS, CPR or obtained prior to completion of orientation.. within 30 Days Required and
        • Must obtain specialty certification within 2 years of hire (CCRN, CFRN, or CTRN). within 1-1/2 Yrs Required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

        • Demonstrated ability to precept.
        • Demonstrated high level of clinical competence.
        • Effective interpersonal skills, including verbal and written communication.
        • Basic math skills.
        • Basic computer skills preferred.
        • Collaborates with on-line medical control physicians to manage the patient care of complex patients in transport.
        • Communicates patient's clinical information clearly and accurately in verbal and written format. Clearly and accurately documents pertinent information in the patient's medical record. Consistently demonstrates effective documentation practices and develops strategies to ensure complete documentation of patient care.
        • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
        • Delivers expert nursing care in a ground ambulance to multiple patient types to include adult subspecialties, pediatrics, and high-risk obstetrics. Identifies current and potential complex problems of a specific patient population, critically analyzes trends and changes in patient status, and plans appropriate interventions directly or indirectly through other nurses. Assesses needs of patients with highly complex problems. Documents all patient care activities in the electronic medical record. Documents patient information in a manner that reflects the ability to integrate the nursing assessment data, pathophysiology of disease processes, and the therapeutic regimen into an appropriate evaluation of the patient status.
        • Demonstrates the initiative to seek out current nursing research findings that address patient care issues, and communicates relevant research findings to staff.
        • Maintains a safe and therapeutic environment of caring for patients and families. Provides basic patient comfort measures during procedures. When necessary, provides environmental support to expedite timely patient admission or transfer. Identifies and acts upon opportunities to improve the environment of care.
        • Participates in MedSTAR Transport safety program.
        • Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams as appropriate. Participates in meetings, serves on committees and represents the department and hospital/facility in community outreach efforts as appropriate.
        • Participates in the orientation program for new staff.
        • Provides direct patient care and evaluates outcomes, based on assessment of physical, emotional, biophysical, and spiritual needs. Incorporates the principles of patient-centered care.
        • Provides feedback and participates in program safety initiatives as part of the program's safety management system.
        • Provides for the emotional support of patients and families during the crisis of illness. Demonstrates patient/family advocacy.
        • Seeks opportunities to participate in developing/revising standards of practice to meet changing patient population requirements. In coordinating the delivery of patient care, delegates activities to unlicensed staff in accordance with system policies, principles of Patient-Centered Care, and the Maryland Nurse Practice Act. Supervises the performance of the delegated nursing task by the unlicensed staff. Assists staff in delegation/time management skills. Identifies ways to facilitate working relationships among all levels of staff.
